Bismillah Hir Rahman Ir Raheem
Peace and blessings be upon you all
I have decided to venture in an in-depth endeavour/project. I’ve decided to read through the entire Quran in Arabic in search for names.
No, I’m not naming my future unborn children but for a while I’ve noticed that while listening to Tafseer of the Quran, I noticed the words that the speaker highlights are actually names of people I’ve heard in my life. These aren’t just ordinary words but they possess a beautiful, deep meaning. Vice versa, the names I’m aware of in the Quran in a way, lead me to people in real life who possess those names.
As I shared in a previous post about how one should choose carefully their children’s name based on the personality it is derived from, which led to me naming my future son Yusuf based on Hazrat Yusuf (A.S)’S inspiring life of trials and tribulations and immense hope in Allah, one should choose a name that inspires the child and he or she can in a way embody the traits of his or her name.
Hence, I’ve decided to make a list of those names with their meanings and their Quranic references with them. This will be helpful for those wanting to choose a good Muslim name for their child and most importantly, helps us learn the beautiful language of Arabic and the beautiful words Allah has used in the Quran:
- Mansour – to spread or scatter (25:23)

I also came across the names Rabia and Mahin in the Quran but the translation didn’t show that the meaning of those words were positive so that was doubtful and further peaked my interest.
I’ll keep on updating this list as I learn more. If any of you have come across an un-obvious names in the Quran, do let me know the name, its meaning and its Quranic reference so I can verify it myself. May Allah guide us in learning more about His Deen and His Book’s language. Ameen.
